The Official Danica Patrick Fan Site
Talk about it here.
Did Danica hit the wall early in practice? I turned on TV and she has only run 6 laps, is 11 mph slower than top car and there are only 30 minutes left. Are they in the garage listening to country music? WTH is going on?
So, time for me to express my disgust with the way the 10 team runs practice. She had 6 laps, ran top speed of 179 mph, which was 41st in time. Then sat in garage til 30 minutes to go.... comes out and runs 2 laps at 178 mph.
Mark Martin runs 16 laps and a top of 187 mph - Ryan runs 13 at top of 180 mph and Danica is in garage talking to Tony G. I guess they figure that since qualifying is later in the day, why waste time practicing if you are going to qualify around 35+ anyway.
If anyone out there can explain this moronic behavior, then I welcome your comments.
Should we be laughing or crying? Danica comes out to run 2 laps (now total of 10 laps for a 90 minute practice) and they say that the 10 team must be concentrating on qualifying since she has not run very many laps... and guess what... she runs 3 mph slower.
So, from 179 mph, then to 178 mph and now to 175 mph. Is this Bizarro world? did I miss the memo saying the slowest car wins the pole? or is this a head fake and she will run 185 in qualifying?
How about we take a flyer and because she is qualifying late (35th) and a much cooler track, can we hope she betters the 182 mph from practice and does a 185 or better? Might as well wish for more rather than less.
The #10 team rarely runs faster in qualifying then they do in practice, they will be starting deep in the field as usual. Hard to believe they learned a whole lot in only 13 laps. Sounds like most cars in qualifying have not picked up much speed from practice. Hope she is not last, but 179mph is going to put her in the 40's if that is her qualifying speed.
After qualifying 22nd at Bristol last week, her best non-plate track start, she betters that this week and qualifies 21st (qualified 23rd at Atlanta last year), ahead of some big names too, including two of her three teammates for 2014 plus Mark Martin.
Looking forward to practice tomorrow in race trim.
BTW- Congrats to Ricky on his 1st Sprint Cup series pole!
Qualifying 21st is not bad for her. Beat her starting position from last year by a couple of spots. How about Ricky? Now the couple has something to talk about tonight in comparing there poles and the Sprint Unlimited next year.
I checked qualifying results and screamed loud enough that my fiancé is wondering whether I'll survive to our wedding without an aneurysm. I thought she was gonna end up last but they found some speed out of somewhere. Another top 25 starting spot. I'd like a top 25 finish too:)
And go Ricky for earing his first Sprint Cup pole.
Just maintaining her position on track and avoiding incidents will likely net a top 15.
I know some on here get really frustrated with practice (I do as well at times) but we need to remember practice is for trying to learn and get better. Also, tv does a terrible job of covering practice and 90% of the time you don't know what the team is trying to accomplish so it is better to just chill and see how everything ends up (I'm learning to do this)...
Turns out they were trying a new setup initially... Here's part of her comment from her MA this afternoon before qualifying:
“You know I think that it’s not an easy track. It’s slippery so grip is at a premium and balance is at a premium. We struggled with that at the beginning. We were trying a whole different set-up and it really didn’t work. The very last qualifying run was a little bit better. I finally felt like the car was in the track a little bit. Hopefully, that means that we will be able to make it even better that amount again for qualifying.
Here's another good quote from her MA this afternoon before qualifying...
"...I used to think that I had a sort of track that I was best at, but I think it just has to do with where the strengths of your team are and where you just make progress on the weekend. It could have been easy to melt down a little bit in practice and get everyone upset and take ourselves out of the game, but we all stayed calm. We worked hard and our last run was our best run. That is the kind of stuff that we need to pull us through the weekend.”
Ok, I'm fed up with lack of TV coverage. Who has Fox Sports 2? Never heard of it so guess no live practice for me today. :(
We have FS2 on Time Warner on Channel 228, so maybe you do have it if you have FS1 (formerly SPEED).
