Permalink Reply by Damon on December 19, 2010 at 4:05pm In light of yesterday's AP Female of the year voting, just thought I'd bump this thread from last year and ask the age-old question. Why do people hate women's sports so much? A horse takes 2nd in the female athlete of the year voting for the second consective year? Really?

I worked in with a division 1 NCAA women's basketball program for several years and you are correct, female athletes get no respect, regardless of the fact that they work just as hard, if not harder, than their male counterparts. Looking at the UConn women's basketball team and their current streak, I think they are starting to garner a little more attention/respect for women in sports, a big part of it though, is that women just don't get the marketing push that the men do. Never has an NBA team had to stick a corporate logo on their uniforms, but we see that in the WNBA every day, sponsorships are just that hard to sell for the WNBA. Athletes like Danica, Diana Taurisi, Jennie Finch & Lindsey Vonn are receiving a ton of marketing attention, but as a whole, you just don't see the same effort when it comes to women, especially with team sports. It's a sad state when the highest grossing female team sport in the United States in 2010 is the Lingerie Football League, when we have some outstanding professional women's softball and soccer, which are programs that the majority of the general public doesn't even know about.
Permalink Reply by Gene Benn on December 21, 2010 at 4:02pm Back 23 years ago I coached Little League Girls softball with my two daughters. This was a total uphill battle to get respect for our girls, I was told Little League was for boys, not girls. I spent 11 years at this and within a couple of years we began to get respect and actually were treated as equals. This treatment of women is why I am such a Danica fan especially in the NASCAR ranks, and after the last 2 races I think the good old boys are beginning to treat Danica with some much needed respect. These guys need to understand that getting beat by a women should not break their precious EGO'S, that being said don't wreck her just try and out drive her.Race her CLEAN and she will race you clean or as some have found out she just might retaliate!!

Check out who got 2 votes this year in AP Female Athlete of the Year voting? I'm shocked, but pleasantly surprised.....on the other hand, the AP once again shows that some of those who vote shouldn't be allowed too.
The last 2 years have seen a horse finish 2nd in the voting, now a coach - A COACH - is getting votes with actual athletes (BTW- Carmelita Jeter BELONGS on this list, but because track isn't that big until the Olympics she isn't...bummer), absolutely ridiculous.
Permalink Reply by TomL on December 23, 2011 at 12:29pm I see something happening here, Danica erases a record in NASCAR that has been on the books for many years and everyone expects her to do it. I beleive it has come to the point where in racing, Danica will be held to a different standard. Maybe by expectation, Danica has changed the way the world looks at her as a racer? What would be an astounding feat by another women in racing is normal/expected for Danica?
Permalink Reply by Damon on December 24, 2011 at 11:39am Agreed, it's been that way for her since she finished 4th at Indy in 2005 and it's a credit to her for handling everything that has come with it over the last 7 years as the "face of the sport", both positive and negative.
