Permalink Reply by David Williams on November 27, 2012 at 7:52pm Always happy to see other drivers from IndyCar learning how difficult it is to make the switch to stock cars. It sounds like in Brazil the welcome given such newcomers is even worse than it is in the United States. Something like going from boxing, with its rules and regulations, to cage fighting, the latest example of the advance in American culture.

This is off-topic but I thought it was an interesting read about Barrichello's and TK's stock car adventures in Brazil. :)

Permalink Reply by Scott on November 27, 2012 at 10:26pm Your use of the phrase is confusing then. What do you see Danica as hedging her bets against? The term typically implies a fallback position from the wager. Such as Danica was hedging her bet when she chose a two year partial Nascar and full Indycar schedule. The wager was moving to Nascar, while maintaining her Indycar ride as the fallback option if she didn't like Nascar or didn't believe she could be successful in Nascar. A limited Nationwide schedule isn't analogous to that. It isn't a fallback position.
The implication of your initial post using the phrase was that Danica's desire to run Nationwide races came from a loss of confidence in her ability to be successful on the Cup level. You can say "hedging your bets" isn't negative and is smart strategy, but it definitely implies a lack or loss of confidence in the wager thus the need to hedge. And that implied change in Danica's confidence I think is something we are objecting too, especially when a limited Nationwide schedule was likely always in the works, but just not announced rather than a recent result of Danica's losing confidence in her bet.

Frankly, I don't understand why everyone is so upset by the use of the phrase "hedging your bets." It's not a negative thing to do. It's a wise thing to do. And I think Danica's doing what I called hedging her bets was a wise thing to do and I'm very glad she did it. Here's a definition and example from the online source The Free Dictionary:
hedge one's bets
Fig. to reduce one's loss on a bet or on an investment by counterbalancing the loss in some way. Bob bet Ann that the plane would be late. He usually hedges his bets. This time he called the airline and asked about the plane before he made the bet. John bought some stock and then bet Mary that the stock would go down in value in one year. He has hedged his bets perfectly. If the stock goes up, he sells it, pays off Mary, and still makes a profit. If it goes down, he reduces his loss by winning the bet he made with Mary.
Regarding Danica wanting to do some NNs races in 2013 apparently one of the problems is Sponsors--believe that? She made reference to wanting to run some NNs races when interviewed recently and she used the phrase "they didnt know what team it might be and they were looking for sponsors--believe that? Rumors saying she may run PT for RCR may not be true either as they announced Tony Stewart would run the Daytona NNs race for them and thats what Danica wants to run? Apparently Godaddy has fulfilled what it wanted and that was her going FT to cup racing and now they may not sponsor her in any NNs races? Its hard to believe she would be driving any car without the Godaddy logo on it, course I guess we'll know when we know and thats it.
BTW--JRM recently said its doubtfull they will find any sponsors for Cole Whitt other then some PT races so that leaves them with only the one FT #5 car and JR running 4 races in the #88 car--talk about JRM going downhill--lookout? There are some hidden rumors that they just dont want Danica back with them as she is NOT capable of winning and that IS their main focus now with things changing within their co..-Good luck with that--heres a news flash--all teams want a winning driver..

Permalink Reply by Daniel on November 30, 2012 at 7:41pm It boils dow to physics insofar as just saying "ready!". The big race style and geometry/culture shock has already happened. Of course she would do better in the future in NNS but at this point it would be deminishing returns for experience leading to Cup, I think. It could, in fact, reinforce habits that would be bad in the more powerful platform making the transition more difficult.
